Meet Our Attorney
As a recognized expert in intellectual property law, Mark Terry is regularly featured in legal publications and academic journals. Mr. Terry has written numerous articles on intellectual property and frequently speaks at conferences and symposiums on patent and trademark issues. Mark Terry is a registered patent attorney in Florida concentrating exclusively on patent, trademark, copyright and licensing matters. He focuses primarily on the preparation and prosecution of U.S. and international patent and trademark applications, as well as related litigation, including enforcement and defense. In addition, Mr. Terry provides patent infringement and non-infringement opinions and freedom-to-operate assessments. Mr. Terry is Board Certified by the Florida Bar in Intellectual Property Law. Certification is the highest level of recognition by The Florida Bar of the competency and experience of attorneys in the areas of law approved for certification by the Supreme Court of Florida. Mr. Terry started his career as a software engineer for the engineering firm of Trident Systems in the Washington D.C. area. For over four years, Mr. Terry researched and developed numerous software applications for the Army, Navy and Department of Defense in a wide variety of areas, including requirements engineering, traceability, situational awareness, neural networks, target recognition, trajectory paths and high fidelity simulations. He developed software on an assortment of platforms, including Windows, Unix and Linux and in a range of programming languages, including C++, Pascal, Fortran 77, and Visual Basic. Mr. Terry continued his career as a Patent Examiner at the United States Patent and Trademark Office. He was a member of Technology Center 2700 and examined patent applications for a wide range of technologies including database access, data storage, database management systems and data display methods. As a Patent Examiner, Mr. Terry graduated from first year Examiner training at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office Patent Academy. While at the USPTO, Mr. Terry worked on multiple controversial and high profile cases, including patent applications related to Y2K solutions and Amazon patent applications. Subsequent to his stint as a Patent Examiner, Mr. Terry worked as a patent associate for the D.C.-area intellectual property law firm of Sterne, Kessler, Goldstein and Fox, recognized to be among the top patent law firms in the United States. At Sterne Kessler, Mr. Terry represented multiple Fortune 500 companies, such as Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) Company, Silicon Graphics, Inc. and MIPS. Mr. Terry practiced patent preparation and prosecution, as well as litigation support. Before founding Terry & Company, Mr. Terry worked as a patent associate for the prestigious Florida law firm of Holland & Knight. With more than 1200 lawyers throughout the United States and abroad, Holland & Knight is among the 10 largest law firms in the world and the second largest law firm in Florida. At Holland & Knight, Mr. Terry continued representing large blue-chip corporations, such as IBM, Motorola and Dole USA. Mr. Terry practiced patent preparation and prosecution, trademark prosecution, licensing agreements and intellectual property litigation. Mr. Terry also currently serves as of counsel to the reputable intellectual property law firm of Carey Rodriguez - a boutique South Florida law firm focusing on intellectual property transactions and litigation. The firm represents an impressive roster of U.S. and international clients, including Fortune 500 corporations, middle market companies, and small businesses and entrepreneurs. EDUCATION: Mr. Terry was further a Physics Fellow at the University of Michigan Department of Astronomy in Ann Arbor, MI and a Physics Visiting Fellow at the Stanford University Linear Accelerator Center in Palo Alto, CA. Mr. Terry later received a Juris Doctor degree, with a concentration in the Intellectual Property Sequence, from George Mason University School of Law, in Arlington VA. MEMBERSHIPS: Mr. Terry is further a member of the federal United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida, the United States District Court for the Middle District of Florida and the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit. He is also a member of the federal Patent Bar, thereby registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and the Board of Patent Appeals.
